Madonna Dominates the 2026 VMAs: 7 Wins, Artist of the Year, and the Sabrina Carpenter Moment Everyone’s Talking About

Madonna owned the night at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home seven Moon Persons — including the coveted Artist of the Year — at Sunday’s ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg.

The Queen of Pop entered the evening as the most-nominated artist and left as its biggest winner. Alongside Artist of the Year, Madonna collected Best Album for Confessions II, plus Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, and Best Long Form Video for Confessions II – The Film. She also shared the Best Collaboration trophy with Sabrina Carpenter for their duet “Bring Your Love.”

But it was her acceptance speech for Best Collaboration that delivered the night’s most viral moment. Madonna revealed that Carpenter’s team took five days to respond to her outreach about the duet — so she took matters into her own hands.

“Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am,” Madonna told the audience. “When five days passed and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and didn’t hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me — 5 days — I DM’ed her.”

The direct approach worked. “And this is a true story, she answered me back and I don’t know, within weeks we were in the studio together. It was fabulous,” Madonna continued, as a visibly surprised Carpenter laughed beside her on stage.

The collaboration caps a landmark year for Madonna. She also opened Sunday’s ceremony with her first VMAs performance in 23 years, delivering a club-inspired medley from Confessions II. Carpenter joined her at the piano for “Bring Your Love,” while Charli xcx appeared for a “Danceteria” remix. Julia Garner, Sombr, and Seth Rogen also made surprise appearances during the elaborate production number.

Taylor Swift was the night’s other big story. She won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and Best Direction for “Opalite,” and received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, presented by Dakota Johnson. The honorary award pushed Swift past Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in VMA history. Swift also used the moment to premiere the music video for “Patient Zero,” starring Johnson and Colin Farrell.

BTS swept all three categories in which they were nominated, with “SWIM” earning Song of the Year and Best K-Pop, plus Best Group. The night also featured emotional tributes: Kacey Musgraves honored the late Dolly Parton, Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, and Adam Lambert, RAYE, Sombr, and Teddy Swims celebrated George Michael.

Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist, while winners across genre categories included LISA (Best Pop), Cardi B featuring Kehlani (Best Hip-Hop), Bruno Mars (Best R&B), Olivia Rodrigo (Best Alternative), Bad Bunny (Best Latin), and Ella Langley (Best Country).

For Madonna, the seven wins cap a triumphant return to the VMA stage — and if her speech proved anything, it’s that when the Queen of Pop wants a collaboration, not even a five-day wait will stand in her way.

The Speeches Nobody Saw Coming

Madonna’s acceptance speeches were as quotable as her performance. Collecting her first Moon Person of the night, she admitted, “It’s been a while since I did one of these things… I’ve prepared nothing.” Later, accepting Artist of the Year, she deadpanned: “First of all, I would like to thank my fingers because I can always count on them.”

The emotional peak came when she looked back on her infamous 1984 VMA debut — the shoe mishap her manager said had ended her career — and credited longtime collaborator Stuart Price as her “ride or die.” After her Best Dance win she asked the crowd: “Who knew that 20 years after Confessions we could pull it off again?” The seven wins bring her career VMA total to 27.

The Ex Who Stole the Opening Number

The night’s best-kept secret was a face from Madonna’s past: former boyfriend Tony Ward appeared in the bathroom sequence of her opening performance, 35 years after their 1990–91 romance. Ward famously starred in her provocative 1990 “Justify My Love” video — the one MTV declined to air — and later appeared in her 1992 photography book Sex. His surprise return, inside a show celebrating her newest chapter, was pure Madonna: nothing is ever really in the past.

The Night’s Other Record-Breakers

Taylor Swift dedicated her Video of the Year win for “The Fate of Ophelia” to “the ultimate showgirl,” the late Dolly Parton: “I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.” Kacey Musgraves honored Parton with a spare, devastating “I Will Always Love You,” while Swift premiered her “Patient Zero” video starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Nirvana took the Video Vanguard Award, Best New Artist Sienna Spiro performed “Great Expectations,” and BTS swept all three of their categories — Song of the Year for “Swim,” Best K-Pop, and Best Group.
